Description

This experiment mimics the Spell casting technique used in Lionhead Studio's Black and White. The user can give commands to the computer by drawing different shapes with the cursor. Try to move your mouse smoothly and at an average speed - not too fast, but not too slow either. If the computer understands your command, a small orange rectangle will show up next to the correct shape. Built with Processing (www.processing.org).

Try moving the mouse slowly for the S and the Circle.

I had to move very slow and smooth for the 'S' shape. I think it should only draw when you click and drag the mouse, I'm not so keen on the lines always being there. The bars indicating that a shape was recognised weren't very clear at first. I thought it was telling me "You've drawn a straight line!". I hope you can build on this, maybe add some colour ; )

Perhaps you could draw / fade the completed shape onto the screen after a successful cast?

I have updated the applet with some colours. You will have to restart Java to see the changes.

To see the changes you can just clear the java cache (open java-console, and hit x on your keyboard) Really nice btw.. I believe that effect is used in the game Black and White.. really neat ;)

This is absolutely brilliant. Reminds me of the game Black and White, without the need to hold down a mouse button. This has quite the potential to be used in some UIs.

It seems that for it to recognize the S shape your S needs to be drawn with the top curled appropriately downward. Draw the exact S shape you see over on the left, not necessarily the sort of S you're used to writing.
